1st Round Recap (05/06/13)

Recapping the 1st Round of the NBA Playoffs as well as updated futures odds to win each conference and the NBA Championship.

The 1st Round of the NBA Playoffs is over and below we recap each series and how each team performed against-the-spread. The big winners in the first round were backers of the Spurs and Warriors who combined to go 10-0 ATS. To see who we predicted to win each series check out our 2013 NBA Playoff Odds.

(1) Heat vs. (8) Bucks

Heat win series 4-0

For the 6th time in NBA history a team has swept a 7-game series while winning all four games by double digits. Three of the six times it has happened LeBron James has been on the team. Miami has had a week to rest and prepare for the second round.

(2) Knicks vs. (7) Celtics

Knicks 3-3 against-the-spread

New York won the first three games by an average of 12 points before the Celtics managed to rattle off two straight to scare all of New York. The Knicks managed to win and cover as 2.5 point favorites in Boston for the franchise’s first series win since 2000. The previous time the Knicks had won a playoff series Patrick Ewing was on the team.

(3) Pacers vs. (6) Hawks

The home teams held serve until Atlanta slipped in Game 6 to give the series to Indiana. The Pacers snapped a 13-game losing streak in Atlanta, which dated back to 2006, with their win last Friday night.

(4) Nets vs. (5) Bulls

Bulls 3-4 against-the-spread

The only series to go seven games, Brooklyn looked dominant in Game 1 before the Bulls won three straight including a 142-134, 3 OT thriller in Chicago. The Nets managed to force Game 7 and were 7 point favorites at home but Chicago pulled the upset.

(1) Thunder vs. (8) Rockets

The Thunder lost Russell Westbrook for the remainder of the playoffs after he suffered an injury in Game 2 of the series. OKC managed to hold off a pesky Rockets team for the series win but their championship hopes are in doubt without one of the NBA’s superstars.

(2) Spurs vs. (7) Lakers

San Antonio handled the Lakers throughout this series dealing Los Angeles their first opening round exit since 2007. Tracy McGrady finally won a playoff series, snapping an eight series long losing streak. McGrady only played five minutes and scored 0 points for the Spurs in the series.

(3) Nuggets vs. (6) Warriors

Warriors 6-0 against-the-spread

Golden State advances to the second round for the first time in six years. The Warriors had apparently lost David Lee for the playoffs to a hip injury in Game 1 but he returned in Game 6 and has not ruled himself out of the opening game against the Spurs in the second round. Stephen Curry has been the hero averaging 24 points per game. 

(4) Clippers vs. (5) Grizzlies

Grizzlies 5-1 against-the-spread

Memphis became only the 10th team in NBA history to win four straight after trailing 0-2 and the first to win the next four by double digits. Zach Randolph averaged 20 points and 8 rebounds in the series.

Updated Futures Odds

NBA Championship

After dominating the Bucks in the 1st round Miami remains the favorite to win the title. The Heat's odds moved from 2/3 to 4/9. Golden State saw their odds improve the most as 100/1 long shots before the playoffs began to their current odds of 40/1.

Eastern Conference

The Heat are still the favorites to win the East but Indiana has passed New York as the second favorite to win the conference. Indiana's odds moved from 12/1 to 7/1 while New York's odds moved from 7/1 to 8/1.

Western Conference 

Russell Westbrook's injury has made the Spurs the favorite to win the Western Conference at 5/7; prior to Westbrook's injury the Spurs were 5/2 to win the conference. The Thunder see their odds move from 6/5 before the playoffs began to 7/2.
