NFL Power Rankings (10/17/2017)

Not only does our NFL engine run every upcoming game 50,000 times, it plays every team against every other team to come up with the ultimate Power Rankings. Our engine is successful because it best accounts for actual matchups and team's abilities to exploit opponent's weaknesses using strength-of-schedule-adjusted statistics, so the Power Rankings are not necessarily the best way to know who would win between two teams. They are, however, the best possible way to measure which teams have put together the most impressive seasons. The best team may not be favored against the second-best team, but it would be favored more significantly against the rest of the teams in the sport.

To build the NFL Power Rankings below, we "played" every team against every other team 50,000 times each and ranked by overall winning percentage of those games. These Power Rankings are as of (9/3/2017) rosters and projected depth charts.

O-Rank takes an offense's expected points against a league average defense and ranks the teams from best to worst (#1 to #32). Teams that play at a faster pace (no-huddle offense, engage in two minute drills) will typically score more points, so this is not a true representation of efficiency.

D-Rank takes a defense's expected points against a league average offense and ranks the teams from best to worst (#1 to #32). Teams that have offenses that tend to eat up clock and stay on the field a lot will see their defenses get a boost in D-Rank. If all defenses were on the field for the same amount of plays, these rankings would look very different.

The efficiency metrics (O-Pass Eff, O-Rush Eff, D-Pass Eff, D-Rush Eff) are measured on a per play basis. For example, the team ranked with the #1 O-Pass Eff would be expected to gain the most yards per passing attempt, while the team ranked #32 would be expected to gain the least.
