Could Florida compete for the SEC and National Championship with Mike Gundy as coach?

Will Muschamp will to step down as Head Coach of the Florida Gators following the team's final two games of this season. In four years Muschamp put together a 27-20 record including going 17-15 in the SEC.

Last year Florida finished 4-8, the Gators' first losing season since 1979.

Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley said Monday that the search for a new Head Football Coach, one that is offensively minded, would begin immediately. Florida currently ranks 88th nationally in total offense (373.3 yards per game) and 63rd in scoring (29.3 points).

A number of coaches capable of engineering a major offensive turnaround have been mentioned as possible replacements. Mike Gundy, Head Coach at Oklahoma State, is the co-favorite at 9/2 to be the next Florida Head Coach per

What would Florida look like with Mike Gundy as Head Coach?

With Mike Gundy as Head Coach in the Swamp, the Florida Gators have a projected record of 9-3 (an average of 50,000 simulations). Offensively the Gators take a big step forward going from averaging 31.1 points per game to 36.4 points per game against an average FBS team. Florida's offense improves from 56th to 18th in offensive efficiency in our rankings.

The loss of Will Muschamp does impact the defense but not as much as you might expect. The Gators allow on average, against an average FBS team, 21.9 points per game compared to the 20.3 points per game with Gundy at the helm. Florida's defense remains a top 25 unit from an efficiency stand point even when Muschamp departs.

The 2014 season has been a down year for the Gators but even with a 5-4 record, Florida is still a talented team that ranks 26th overall in our most recent Power Rankings.

With Mike Gundy and an improved offensive system, the Gators would rank No. 11 in our Power Rankings ahead of College Football Playoff teams like Florida State and Mississippi State.

The Florida Gators might be a Head Coach and a new offensive scheme away from competing for the SEC and National Championship.
