With a couple months of baseball in the books the awards watch begins with a quick look at contenders and pretenders for the AL MVP and AL Cy Young awards. Plus, current odds for all the top players.

Mike Trout
Preseason: 5/1, Current: 8/5

The two-time All-Star and 2012 Rookie of the Year finished second in the AL MVP voting the last two seasons. Trout's nemesis, Miguel Cabrera, is “only” hitting .319/.369/.559 compared to last season's line of .348/.442/.636.

The Angels' outfielder has been the MVP favorite, has been all season, but ongoing back problems could derail a promising start to the season.

Nelson Cruz
Preseason: N/A, Current: 7/1

Baltimore's outfielder/designated hitter has belted 21 home runs. Cruz leads the American League in home runs, RBI (55) and OPS (1.064). Cruz's performance this season was unexpected given the lack of MVP odds before the season began. At 7/1, the odds suggest Cruz has a 12.5 percent chance of winning the MVP Award, not bad for a guy coming off a 50 game suspension.

Cruz passed David Ortiz in the DH All-Star voting this week.

Edwin Encarnacion
Preseason: 33/1, Current: 15/1

The Blue Jays slugger hit 16 homers in May, all after May 6th. This outburst of power tied Mickey Mantle for the AL record for home runs in a month. Encarnacion had five multi-homer games in May, tying Albert Belle and Harmon Killebrew for the MLB record for any month.

Encarnacion's performance has helped the Blue Jays take control of the AL East and give Toronto a 53.4% chance of winning the division.

AL Cy Young

Masahiro Tanaka
Preseason: 15/1, Current: 4/1

The Yankees signed Tanaka to a seven year $155 million contract before the season began; the deal made the Japanese right-hander the ninth highest paid pitcher in baseball. The contract already looks like a bargain with Tanaka exceeding expectations.

The Yankees new ace leads the AL in ERA (2.06), has an excellent 10.07 K/9 ratio and is extremely consistent – every appearance this season has registered as a quality start.

Mark Buehrle
Preseason: 75/1, Current: 13/2

Buehrle has not missed a start in fourteen seasons and is on pace to throw 200 innings once again this season (thirteen consecutive prior to the 2014 season). The soft tossing lefty has an MLB-best 10 wins. Buehrle's 2.10 ERA is 6th best in baseball and trails only Tanaka and Yu Darvish in the American League.

If you believe the odds, Buehrle has improved his chances of winning the MVP Award from 1.3 percent before the season began to 13.3 percent.

Jesse Chavez
Preseason: N/A, Current: 25/1

It might have taken numerous injuries for Chavez to crack the rotation but the sixth year player made the most of the opportunity. The 30 year old will not win the Cy Young but he has helped to give the Athletics one of the best pitching staffs in baseball.
