2014 Stanley Cup Odds (07/30/13)

By John Ewing
Following NHL free agency we look at a few teams that have seen their odds to win the 2014 Stanley Cup improve. Odds courtesy of Bovada.lv.

Chicago Blackhawks: 15/2 to 6/1
The Blackhawks wisely avoided overpaying Viktor Stalberg (Nashville) and Ray Emery (Philadelphia) letting them skate in free agency. With the cap space they saved they were able to resign center Michal Handzus, winger Bryan Bickell, and defensemen Michal Rozsival. The Blackhawks have positioned themselves to defend their title.

Los Angeles Kings: 14/1 to 12/1
Less is more, or at least that is the philosophy the Kings took toward free agency. Los Angeles essential kept their roster intact with the exceptions of Jonathan Bernier and Rob Scuderi signing elsewhere. With the success the Kings have had in the last two years general manager Dean Lombardi has decided to stand pat and enter the 2013-14 season with the same core.

Philadelphia Flyers: 33/1 to 28/1
The Flyers took care of their own giving their captain Claude Giroux an eight-year extension. Philadelphia signed Ray Emery, 17-1 with a 1.94 GAA last season, to challenge for the starting goalie role. The Flyers also added size and scoring on offense with the signing of Vincent Lecavalier.

Edmonton Oilers: 33/1 to 20/1
The Oilers set out to improve their defense in free agency. First, they signed Andrew Ference, a former alternate captain for the Bruins, a great penalty killer. Edmonton then signed Boyd Gordon, known for gritty defense but also strong faceoff skills. With the addition of seventh overall pick Darnell Nurse the Oilers are looking to make the playoffs for the first time since 2006.
