The 2014 college football season, the first with the new four-team College Football Playoff, is still more than three months away from kicking off. However, the buzz surrounding the Heisman Trophy race has already started.

There are twenty-three players listed with odds. Of those players, thirteen are quarterbacks and they represent the four most likely winners. Jameis Winston, Braxton Miller, Marcus Mariota and Bryce Petty, per their odds, are 68 percent likely to win the 2014 Heisman Trophy.

Eight conferences have a Heisman hopeful. The SEC has the most players, six, listed with odds. Following the SEC is the Pac-12 (5), ACC (3), Big 10 (3), Big 12 (3), Independent (1), Mid-American (1) and Conference USA (1).

Let's look at a few of the favorites and what winning would mean to the history of the award.

Jameis Winston: 5/2 odds

Winston will become the fifth player in the last decade to return to school following a Heisman campaign. Matt Leinart, Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford and Johnny Manziel all failed to join Archie Griffin as a two-time winner of the award. Winston is in good position to repeat as the best player in college football, he is the early Heisman favorite on the defending National Championship team.

Todd Gurley: 12/1 odds

Georgia's running back has the best non-quarterback odds on the board. Signal callers have won the Heisman in twelve of the last fourteen seasons and in each of the past five. Can Gurley end the streak? Running backs have won the Heisman forty-two times, most of any position.

Myles Jack: 33/1 odds

The UCLA linebacker is the only defensive player listed with odds. Jadeveon Clowney had 14/1 odds last season to win but failed to be included in a record six invitees to the Heisman ceremony. If Jack can win, he will become the first defensive player (Jack also plays offense and special teams) to win the award since Charles Woodson in 1997.
