Lost for the season (07/29/13)

By John Ewing
With training camps come injuries. A look at the Jeremy Maclin and Dennis Pitta injuries and projected stats before the injuries. Our 2013 NFL Season Preview will be available starting August 6th.

Injuries happen, especially during NFL training camps. In the last few days wide receiver Jeremy Maclin (Eagles) and center Dan Koppen (Broncos) suffered season ending ACL injuries while tight end Dennis Pitta (Ravens) was lost to a hip injury. Lesser-known players wide receiver Ryan Swope (Cardinals) retired due to concussion fear and offensive tackle Ryan Miller (Browns) was hospitalized with a serious head injury.

Below we look at two of the more prominent offensive weapons that were lost for the 2013 campaign and what impact this will have on the upcoming season. Note: Our 2013 NFL Preview will be available starting August 6th.

Jeremy Maclin
The fifth year receiver suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during practice on Saturday. The Eagles announced that Maclin will miss the 2013 season.

Maclin lead the team in receptions (69), yards (857), and touchdown catches (7) last season.

The former first-round pick was in his final year of his rookie contract.

2013 Season Projection (Prior to Injury)
65.6 Receptions, 833.7 Receiving Yards, 6.61 Touchdowns
Maclin was our 32nd overall wide receiver; DeSean Jackson was the 42nd overall receiver. The uncertainty at quarterback in Philadelphia coupled with installing a new offense lowered our expectations for the Eagles’ passing game.

Impact
After the Maclin injury how high will DeSean Jackson move up in our receiver rankings?

With Maclin out, who is the best Missouri wide receiver in the NFL, Brad Smith (Bills) or Danario Alexander (Chargers)? Note: Unless you are a Mizzou fan like myself you probably do not care but like Adam Sandler in the Wedding Singer, I have a microphone (article) and you will listen (read) every damn word I have to say!

Dennis Pitta
The 6-foot-4, 245-pounder will miss the 2013 season after sustaining a fractured and dislocated hip. Pitta figured to see an expanded role in the team’s offense this year with the departure of Anquan Boldin.

The fourth year pro caught 61 passes (9th among tight ends) for 669 yards (11th TE) and 7 touchdowns (6h TE) last season.

2013 Season Projections (Prior to Injury)
79.7 Receptions, 877.7 Receiving Yards, 6.5 Touchdowns
Pitta was ranked as our sixth best tight end. For fantasy purposes we believed Pitta would have a better season than Jeremy Maclin. Pitta’s projected statistics would have been career highs in receptions and yards.

Impact

Regardless of the question, Visanthe Shiancoe is not the answer.

How will Pitta’s targets be distributed? Does this mean more looks for Torrey Smith and Ray Rice?
