With NFL training camps underway, we check in on a few key position battles around the league including NFL rookies. (2014 projections for rookies are based on this analysis which projects rookie seasons for all NFL prospects as if they were starters on average NFL teams).

In the lead up to the release of our 2014 NFL Preview, we look at some of the most prominent clashes occurring in NFL training camps.

The 2014 NFL Preview will be available on August 6th.

Cleveland Browns – Running Back competition

    Challenger: Ben Tate
2013 Stats – 771 rushing yards, 10 rushing TDs, 140 receiving yards, 0 receiving TDs

Cleveland struggled to move the ball on the ground last season finishing 27th in rushing (86.4 ypg). Tate should help as he has averaged 4.7 yards per carry in his career. The problem with the former Texans running back is health. Over the last four seasons Tate has missed 24 games due to injury.

    Challenger: Terrance West
    2014 Projections – 1,008 rushing yards, 202 receiving yards, 12 total TDs

The Towson product was just the 15th best running back prospect in our rankings entering the NFL draft. The Browns took West in the third round and early reports out of camp have him impressing the coaching staff.

The 5'10”, 225 lbs back was known as a good runner, but the question was could he be effective in the passing game. Head Coach Mike Pettine said he has been “shocked” by West's outstanding performance catching passes out of the backfield.

West is currently being drafted in the 14th round in fantasy drafts. If he can lock down the No. 1 running back spot, look for his draft stock to rise.

Challenger: Edwin Baker, Isaiah Crowell, and Dion Lewis

This group is competing to be the third string back. Baker finished as last year's starter, there was buzz around Lewis before he got hurt last year in training camp and Crowell is an undrafted free agent.
